Making Money: At the End of the Day Have You Helped Someone Else?

What is this crazy, stressful, painful, sometimes wonderful life REALLY about?

Making money? Having the biggest house, nicest car or the most toys? Winning? Crushing the competition? Helping a friend, family member or total stranger fix a problem?

Which of those gives you joy? When you’re on your death bed, what memories will you cherish? When you face God, what will you have to show for your life? (I’m pretty sure that “stuff” is nowhere on the list.)

Let’s face it — having money definitely gives us joy, but only because of what we can do with it. Money can give us peace of mind and some freedom from stress. Having “toys” gives us renewal from our daily stresses, but sometimes can be a source of false “pride” and ego. “Winning” suggests someone else has lost. Helping others ALWAYS is a source of satisfaction and joy.

Our fast-paced lives have gotten away from “purpose.”

Our desire seems to mostly boil down to “I need to make more money.” But, MONEY, in and of itself, is not the primary motivator for most people.

Example: I lost my business a few years ago along with most of my life savings. I NEEDED MONEY. But, that need was not sufficient motivation to enable me to do what I had to do in order to be successful in the outside sales job I took (because that’s where you can make good money, at least in the “job” world). Money, alone, couldn’t make me go that far outside my comfort zone.

So, identify your REAL priorities. What will help you identify your goals and assign more purpose to attaining them? What goal can you focus on that will energize you enough to do the work and have the patience to achieve it?
